Cream, Lotion Or A Mousse - Which Is The Best For Dry Skin?
Many people hold the incorrect assumption that all moisturising products in the shops today are basically identical. The same components, mixed in an identical way. The same viscosity. Similar products all possessing the same underlying properties. Just the logo is different.
In actuality, these wrong beliefs not only fall wide of the mark, but they can be responsible for unnecessary inconvenience and avoidable expense.
Barrier creams and moisturisers vary a good deal from brand to brand. It is simply not practicable to create a moisturising cream that all skin circumstances and types respond to equally. There is no "one size fits all" solution when it comes to skin care.
People come in all shapes, sizes and ethnic origin. What may be best suited for one individual will invariably not be the most appropriate for someone else with a different background or genetic makeup.
Also, everybody has their own unique circumstances.
Working surrounds and circumstances will vary from individual to individual. One person may be employed in a factory environment where a stuffy atmosphere is laden with microscopic industrial by-products. This individual will have very different skin care requirements when compared to another individual who finds themselves in the open air for much of their working time.
The weather plays an important part in any skin care routine as well. A moisturiser that is deemed suitable for the Spring or Summer is most probably not the most effect moisturiser to use during the fall or winter.
When deciding to purchase a moisturising product you should understand that they are loosely segregated into three main groupings Namely, creams, lotions and the newer innovation of the mousse based products. Thus, when were are considering these three groupings, what are the basic properties that define one group from another?
Creams are, in the vast majority of cases, dominated by their chief component, which is petroleum jelly.
Petroleum jelly hails from the 19th century oil wells of Pennsylvania. Later, perhaps in an attempt to hide its origins, it was given the name Vaseline. It derives directly from "rod wax", a sticky waste product that has a tendency to collect around the head of the pump rods in traditional oil wells. This rod wax is the basis of a barrier cream that was originally patented by chemist Robert Chesebrough in 1872. The trade name that Chesebrough choose for his new formulation was Vaseline. A somewhat perfunctory name since the copious amounts of rod wax that Robert Chesebrough stored were held in everyday household vases. Hence "vase - line" - "elaion" being the Greek word for oil.
It is this petroleum jelly that is responsible for the majority of moisturising creams being heavy and greasy. Whilst providing a thick coating for your skin, creams may be unsuitable, especially on the hands, as they can leave your skin slippery. Heavy moisturising creams also have the tendency to clog the pores or your skin. This makes them particularly unsuitable to use on the face if you have an acne condition. Heavy creams used on the hands can also prove to be problematic if your occupation necessitates wearing gloves for prolonged periods.
Heavy moisturising creams are often cited as being more appropriate for winter use.
Lotions, on the other hand, consist of little or no petroleum jelly at all. Hence, the less gummy and sticky nature of lotions make them easier to rub over your skin. Apart from water, or aqua as it is often listed as, their main constituents will commonly be an oil such as Olive oil or the oil of the Sunflower. Indeed, documentary evidence shows that the use of Olive oil associated with skin care stretches back approximately 6,000 years. It was widely used by the ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans for a variety of purposes.
Perhaps the main drawback of using a lotion is that, after applying, a feeling of stickiness often endures. The high oil content can be slow to dry and this leaves many people with an unpleasant slimy feeling. The relatively high oil content can also be problematical for people already blessed with a naturally oily skin.
Lotion moisturising creams tend to be more popular for spring and summer use.
Mousse formulations are a relatively new development in the area of skin moisturisers. Many believe that mousse products will eventually supersede traditional creams and lotions. It is true that mousse based products are very light and easier to apply than their cream and lotion counterparts. Resulting directly from this, mousse based products usually spread more smoothly and consistently over the epidermis. For this reason, a smaller quantity is needed per application. This results in your epidermis being able to breathe naturally and perspire normally. People with a dry skin problem or skin that is sore or chapped may also find that a mousse is less painful to apply as it does not need vigorous rubbing in.
However, most mousses will be aerosol based which has traditionally been linked to ozone destroying CFC chemicals - this, however, ceased to be a problem with technological advances that were implemented some ten years ago. Further, aerosols usually employ Butane as a delivery agent and this has been connected to the issue of teenage substance abuse.
Mousse based moisturising products are generally considered suitable for all year use.
Whatever your choice of moisturiser, remember to apply it regularly and consistently. Your skin is yours for life, look after it and it will serve you well.
