Making Your Own Lye
Soap is a combination of three ingredients: fat, water and lye. In addition to use in soap recipes, lye can be used to clean containers where oil or protein-based deposits have adhered. Lye is often used as an oven cleaner component. Lye can strip paint finishes, but will leave wood grain raised. Lye solutions have long been used as drain cleaning agents because they decompose soap and hair.
Lye purchased from a store is not the same chemical as lye made from wood ash. Potassium hydroxide is the lye produced from wood ash. The commercially available lye crystals are sodium hydroxide. These two products are not interchangeable. Read recipes carefully to see which type of lye is used or you could be disappointed with your results.
The best ash to use to produce lye (sodium hydroxide) is from hardwoods like oak or maple or fruit trees like apple. Evergreens and pine trees are not suitable woods for ash for this purpose. The wood must be burned at high temperatures with lots of oxygen so that the wood is completely consumed leaving white, paper thin ash, not chunks of charcoal.
Enough ash will be needed such that a waterproof, non-metal container can be filled to a level 3 to 4 inches below the top. This container may be as small as a five gallon plastic container or as large as a wooden barrel.
You will need two non-metals containers for your project. The runoff of lye water will be held in one container while the other will be filled with ashes. Drill a small hole near the bottom of the ash container. The opening should be small enough that it can be sealed with a toothpick, a piece of corking or a wooden rod -- something which is not metal.
Layer the bottom of the ash container with river gravel. Top this with a four inch layer of packed hay, grass or straw. Fill the remainder of the bucket with wood ash (stop 3 to 4 inches below the top) and tamp it down firmly.
At least five gallons of soft water will be needed, possibly more. Water which is soft has few metals and minerals. You can get soft water using special filters, from lava rock sources like granite or from peat or sandstone. Another alternative is to distill the water you have. Rainwater is a natural source of soft water.
Be cognizant that the location of your container should be well away from animals or children that could upend it. The drainage can be caught in a glass jar, wooden bucket, or an enamel coated pan. Don't use metal or the lye could burn a hole in it. Position the runoff container so that splashing is minimal.
Lye can be blinding if it touches the eye. Ingestion of lye can be deadly. It is possible for lye to sear all sorts of surfaces, in particular fats and oils on the skin. Fats and oils combine with lye in such a way that salts are created which cause scars, permanent injury and burns. Lye burns can be so severe as to cause nerve damage, so you may not feel the burn right away.
Safety precautions should be undertaken before beginning. Don't work in an enclosed area; make sure you have good air exchange. Have contact information for emergency services and poison control on hand. Dress appropriately. Wear rubber gloves (the big yellow kind), long sleeves, have your legs covered and wear safety goggles. Keep vinegar nearby in order to neutralize any skin burns. Washing with water worsens the effect of burns to the skin caused by lye.
Use a broom handle or dowel to create an indentation in the packed ashes. Heat 1 gallon of soft water to boiling. Cautiously allow the boiling water to flow into the container of ash. The ash and water will spit, spew and bubble. When this action calms, slowly add another gallon of water to the ash bucket. You may need to add more ash to the bucket as the level of ash settles. Add enough soft water to cover the ashes in the bucket. Close the lid on the container.
Clear the opening at the base of the container so that the liquid can drain into your second vessel. A full day may be required for this.
Take the runoff from your ash bucket and pour it through again on day two and day three. Recycling the water through the ashes increases the strength of your lye.
An alternative method is to add the water to the ash container while the stopper is still in place. Place the lid on the bucket, leaving it undisturbed for 72 hours. Make sure it is in an area where it can't get spilled. After this time you should drain the bucket.
The runoff is potassium hydroxide (lye) water. A fresh intact egg placed into your lye can test its strength. When the proper strength, your lye solution should cause the egg to float with a portion of its shell exposed with a diameter equaling 2 or 2 1/2 cm's (about the size of a nickel or a quarter). If the egg sinks, the lye water is too weak for soap making. Dilute your lye solution with more rainwater should the egg bob on top of the surfaceindicating that your solution is too strong. Destroy and discard the egg when you are finished.
Heating weak lye water will strengthen your solution by reducing the water content. Enamel finished pots have a protective coating that covers the metal, making them safe to use for this purpose, though they may not be utilized again for food preparation. Watch that you don't burn the lye when you heat the solution. You've reached the proper potency when a chicken feather held to the heated lye solution begins dissolving. Set the pan of lye water aside to cool.
To avoid splashing later, don't fill storage jars more than two thirds full of lye water. Keep in a cool, dark place in tightly sealed containers, away from curious children.
Dig a hole in an out of the way area to dispose of the spent ashes. The ashes should be completely cooled before you cover the hole.
Should you wish to dry your lye solution into crystals (potash), place it into a lye-safe vessel. You'll find that glass is a good choice for this project. Left in the sun, uncovered, the water will evaporate and crystals will form. Potash requires the same safety precautions in storage as outlined for the liquid form.
