The game of basketball has been around for 120 years; James Naismith invented the game in 1891. The West Virginia University Institute of Technology has been playing the sport for 100 years.
Basketball at Tech has been a slam dunk.
From conference titles to Olympians to NBA players, the school celebrated 100 years on the hardwood earlier in December. Current Tech head coach Bob Williams has been around the program for a tenth of its existence. Williams said he's proud to be associated with a great tradition.
"There's an old saying at Tech, 'It's a great day to be a Golden Bear,'" Williams said. "Anything that lasts 100 years is worth celebrating. We've had great tradition, especially in the 50s, 60s and 80s. The guys that come back have such pride in their school and their time here. That's why they come back."
Clair Muscaro was a freshman on Tech's first conference title team in 1950. Under head coach Hugh Bosley, Muscaro said there was no messing with Tech.
"I don't want to say we were feared," Muscaro said. "But they knew if you were going to win it, you had to beat Tech. We had excellent coaching and a lot of talent. I felt like we played as a team. There was a lot of loyalty among the players. It wasn't who was going to get the most points. It's let's see what we have to do to win."
Tech basketball is home to an inventor. From 1955-1967, Neal D. Baisi prowled the Tech sidelines. In his 12-year tenure he invented the zone press - a full-court defense where all five players guard different areas of the floor.
Mike Bell played for Baisi from 1956-1960. During Bell's sophomore year, the Bears were ranked #15 in the Associated Press poll. In that same poll, North Carolina was #1, WVU #10, Duke #17 and Indiana #18. Bell said Baisi had good talent.
"I told (Baisi) one time when I came back, I said, 'The reason you beat everybody was you had better players than everybody.' He said, 'Don't ever tell anybody that, Mike.'" Bell said.
"Practices were so much more difficult than the games at that time. We averaged more than 100 points per game and it was two point shots. Everybody could shoot and play. You'd think that we'd practice offensively. We practiced no offense in practice. We practiced defense and rebounding. No offensive sets at all."
Baisi, who would come to be known as Papa Bear, coached Richwood native and 1968 Olympic gold medalist Mike Barrett. He compiled 319 wins against 76 losses and didn't just invent the zone press, he wrote the book on it, entitled, "Coaching the Zone and Man to Man Pressing Defenses."
David West was Baisi's point guard from 1957-1961. West said it's easy to see why the Bears led the nation in scoring six times during Baisi's tenure.
"What it did, it allowed us to beat teams that were better than us," West said. "We took the ball away from them before they could get it down the floor and shoot."
Bell said Baisi was ahead of his time.
"Alloy made him caps for the baskets so nobody could score in practice," Bell said. "You'd go up, get the rebound and go up the other side. We wore high top galoshes to practice. He had to stop it because it would get so bad, you'd get red rings around your legs. They'd start to really bother people, but it'd help with your agility."
But it wasn't just Baisi who had success for the Bears. Tom Sutherland coached the team in the 1980s to four conference titles and two NAIA national tournament appearances. Ron Beatty played under Sutherland and said he'll take his decade over any other.
"I look at the former teams before us and after us," Beatty said. "I might be prejudiced, but I think the best time and the best talent ever in the West Virginia Conference was around that time in the 1980s. Just to come back here, it's an honor."
Beatty's argument does hold weight. Sedale Threatt roamed Tech's backcourt then. Threatt went on to 12-year NBA career with five teams. Beatty would come back to coach with Bob Williams as an assistant for two years in the 2000s. Beatty said sometimes you don't realize how good something is.
"You sit back and you see all the history going back to Neal Baisi," Beatty said. "It might not be a big D-1 program, but it's not what program you're with. It's a matter of what that tradition stands for and what it's all about."
That Tech tradition stands for 15 conference titles. Bell said what makes everything so satisfying is it's how Tech has been successful.
"We went to New York to play in a tournament and they made fun of us because we didn't have long pants on," Bell said. "We thumped everybody in that area and won the tournament. We came home two days for Christmas, turned around and went down to South Carolina to play in a tournament down there and thumped them.
"The fact that we played with a little chip on our shoulder cause we were just West Virginia boys and they didn't think we could do much. Actually we were all pretty good. And the older we get, the better we are."
On the night Tech celebrated its centennial, the Bears hammered Cincinnati Christian 104-64. Williams said he thought about holding it to a hundred before deciding it was better to honor the high scoring team's of Tech past by putting a few more points on the board
